My son turned 20 (!!??!!) on Sunday, but between his work and social schedules he wasn't available to celebrate with family until Tuesday night. Our tradition is that the birthday boy or girl gets to choose what they want for dinner and dessert, either homemade or at a restaurant. Andrew almost always chooses homemade, and this year was no different. In fact, he chose the same meal as last year (and perhaps before that, too...I can't remember, LOL!). He loves a Portuguese chicken with pasta dish my sister-in-law and brother made for us a number of years ago...almost a chicken and noodle soup. He couldn't decide on dessert, so I started listing some options, and he chose banana cake with cream cheese frosting. Both are easy, so it was no problem to whip up a card for him, too. Why I can have these made in advance when I know the birthday is coming each year I don't know!
Between living in Arizona and his being very proficient in Spanish I felt this was an appropriate theme, and it was well-recieved. Here's some notes on how I made it:
I used the Birthday Fiesta stamp set and coordinating Fiesta Time Framelits to make the llama and saguaro cactus. I actually made 2 cactuses and snipped off the arms to layer one on top of the other to make a taller cactus. The saddle blanket was made by using the pennants Framelit in the set to cut a bit of Festive Birthday Designer Series Paper (DSP). It is a bit larger than the blanket on the stamped image, but works just fine. The donkey piñata is snipped from another piece of the same DSP, and the balloons are punched from that same DSP with the Balloon Bouquet punch. Whisper White Solid Baker's Twine was attached with Glue Dots to the cut pieces. The sentiment was stamped in Whisper White Craft Ink and heat embossed with White Embossing Powder. The ground was made by ripping an edge of the Sahara Sand mat. August Classes
