Watercolor “Smooshing” part 1

Most of my week has been spent getting caught up on life after several days of just lying low with my stomach flu over the long weekend.  This included getting ready for a special technique class for a few of my customers on Watercolor Smooshing to create backgrounds.

We explored 4 methods for getting ink onto a piece of Window Sheet/acetate and then onto different kinds of paper.  The different methods result in different outcomes in the finished product.  Over the next few days I’ll show you some of the results I got, including how I used some of them on cards.

This one was made by putting blotches of ink on a slick surface (in our case a plastic page protector) keeping them separate.  Once they were spritzed with water, we used a slightly-larger-than-the-paper piece of Window Sheet to pick up each color and place it where we wanted on Watercolor Paper.  The nice thing about this method is the ability to place colors fairly precisely, and to go over them a second or third time to get the intensity desired.

I also had started out by masking the edges of the Watercolor Paper with Post-It Notes, so that once I was finished I had a fairly well-defined border.  Once it had dried I decided that the bright colors just needed Basic Black to play off of, so I stamped the sentiment from Butterfly Basics in Archival Basic Black ink, added a butterfly cut with one of the coordinating Framelits, and mounted it on a Basic Black card base.  The whole thing kind of reminds me of Eric Carle’s book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, one of my kids’ favorites!
